Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed grave concern over the resurgence of terrorist attacks in the state, describing the situation as alarming and a serious setback in the fight against insurgency.
Speaking during an emergency security meeting held in Maiduguri on Tuesday, Governor Zulum said the activities of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) are intensifying, with frequent attacks and kidnappings occurring across several communities.
“It is unfortunate that the renewed Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings in many communities almost on a daily basis without confrontation signal that Borno State is losing ground,” Zulum stated.

The governor emphasized that despite the state’s unwavering support to the military and other security agencies in previous years support that had brought relative peace—the recent developments are troubling.
“It is disheartening to note the recent attacks and dislodgement of military formations in Wajirko, Sabon Gari in Damboa Local Government Area, Wulgo in Gamboru Ngala, Izge in Gwoza, among others. These incidents, which include the killing of innocent civilians and security personnel, are a major concern,” he added.
While commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government, and security forces for their continued support, Zulum urged a more strategic response to the crisis. He called for improved military equipment and the adoption of technology-driven warfare to effectively combat the insurgents.
Following the meeting, Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, addressed journalists on the resolutions reached.
He revealed that the military has pledged to intensify its operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP. He also announced that the Nigerian Air Force is expecting new equipment to bolster its capabilities.
Tar praised the ongoing resettlement efforts in the state, which have seen over 100 towns and villages successfully repopulated. However, he noted that three local government areas—Abadam, Guzamala, and Marte—remain too dangerous for returnees due to security threats.
As the rainy season approaches, the state government is also working on clearing farmlands to boost agricultural productivity. “Food security is the best security,” Tar remarked, emphasizing the need for military protection for farmers.
Borno State has been grappling with insurgency since 2009, and the recent resurgence underscores the urgent need for renewed focus and coordinated security efforts in the region.
