The Nigerian Red Cross Society, with support from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has provided N38 million in financial relief to communities in Edo State affected by severe flooding.
The assistance targets residents of Ikpe in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area and Ogbesse in Ovia North East Local Government Area. A total of 500 individuals from the two communities each received N77,000 to help rebuild their lives and businesses.
Speaking during the disbursement in Ikpe community, Mr. Wilson Ekhomogiazin, Branch Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross Society in Edo State, emphasized the significance of the financial support.

“If that money is ploughed into their businesses, it will help improve their standard of living,” he noted.
Ekhomogiazin explained that the Red Cross conducted assessments in the affected communities earlier in 2024 and identified the urgent need for humanitarian intervention. The funds are specifically aimed at the most vulnerable members of society, including elderly people, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.
“This is one of the ways the Red Cross supports the poorest and most vulnerable Nigerians,” he said.
He also highlighted the organization’s earlier flood mitigation efforts. “In October 2024, we implemented what we call the Simplified Early Warning Protocol,” he explained. “The essence of that was to provide disaster preparedness capacity to flood-prone communities. Through that program, we supported 1,000 households.”
The Nigerian Red Cross Society continues to play a crucial role in delivering timely humanitarian support across the country, especially in communities battling the impact of climate-related disasters.
