The International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade on his ascension as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, following his official coronation on Saturday.
In a statement signed by its President, Dr. Fayemi Fatunde Fakayode, and shared with journalists in Ibadan on Tuesday, the council expressed confidence in the new monarch’s ability to preserve and promote the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the Yoruba people.
The council commended the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, for his role as a fierce protector of Yoruba traditions, encouraging Oba Owoade to walk in his footsteps.

“We are elated by the successful installation of Oba Owoade I, Elewuetu, as the new Alaafin of Oyo. Your emergence after the revered Oba Lamidi Adeyemi reflects Eledumare’s divine intention to continue using Oyo as a beacon for the preservation of Yoruba beliefs and religious traditions,” the statement read.
The ICIR also issued a cautionary note, advising the newly installed monarch to remain vigilant against influences that threaten Yoruba royal heritage. They warned particularly against aligning with a controversial South-West traditional ruler who, according to the council, has abandoned Yoruba customs in favor of a foreign identity.
“Kabiyesi, we advise you to be vigilant and steer clear of an interloper who, though selected as a Yoruba ruler, has chosen to parade himself as an ‘emir’ and actively undermines our tradition,” the council warned.
Reaffirming their support, the ICIR pledged to stand by the Alaafin in defending the dignity of the Yoruba throne. The council emphasized that Yoruba cultural and spiritual values continue to gain respect and recognition across the globe, and must be carefully protected.
