- Be aware of your surroundings and ensure you’re in a safe and secure location. Avoid isolated areas or places with poor lighting. If you see a random lady smiling at you, smile back if you must, but don’t get up. You may want to follow her to a dark corner and collect quickie, but na your pockets go quick empty by the guys waiting in that corner.
- Plan your transportation in advance, and consider using reputable taxi services or ride-hailing apps. If you are out with friends, ensure the person who will drive doesn’t drink too much or even drink at all. You may be screaming, “Don Julio, don dey high me”, but you will find yourself inside gutter. And if alone with one or two friends, don’t accept a ride from total strangers.
- Be prepared for police and security checkpoints, especially at night. Ensure you have valid identification and necessary documents. You know your rights, but please don’t argue with them. - If you go to an event with your friend and they encourage you to join them in going to the house of their friend who you don’t know, please go home. After the event, go straight home to avoid going from a hangout to smoking weed or “stop it I like it.”
- Ensure emergency contacts are saved on your phone, including friends, family, and local authorities. In an emergency, you’ll be able to reach out for help quickly.
